I'll try to come up with something original, but if all else fails, I can just do a markov chain again.

Alright, as a first pass, I've implemented something called 'tparty' that takes lines of text and runs them through a couple of rounds of google translate in order to scramble them -- https://github.com/enkiv2/tparty

I've generated some examples by running existing text through tparty alone or in conjunction with another script (synonym-warp, which I used last year: https://github.com/enkiv2/synonym-warp)

For the 'real' entry, I'm thinking maybe I can adapt the hero's journey into a generative grammar or something.

If I can turn each stage into a sequence of events and then write a small grammar for randomizing how to describe these events, I can generate some (very formulaic) narrative text. I can autogenerate names for the archetypes that appear (and use them to replace stand-in names like $SAGE and $HERO as a last pass), and randomly choose some of the specifics. For that, I probably should find a list of archetypes typically found in hero's journey stories.

I probably won't actually get around to doing this, and will instead do markov chains or something similarly uninspired.

It was in the wall a few miles away from the forbidden zone It was horrible, with its horrible antedeluvian grassy inlays and its incredible cyclopean brass handle. she didn't know what this message from the gods could mean, so she went to the tower beneath Whitworth to ask Dr. Ballard . the tower beneath Whitworth was A strange place, hanging off a cliff, made of a heap of disintegrating animal hides, with horrible chicken feet holding it off the ground and a bubbling cauldron on the drawing room.

Propp was mentioned in 2013's resources, and I decided to dive into this year. Stuck more on the theory at the moment.

You're writing all this in (z)shell-script. whoah.

I basically use zsh all day at work, so I'm very comfortable with it. Since I'm essentially just creating permutations and picking one at random, I could do that in practically any language. (What I eventually finished last year was 100% zsh as well -- a parallel markov chainer with a map-reduce structure.) I could do it in prolog, but I'd still need to perform a second pass to choose a random selection, so I might as well do that in-line.

Well, as I suspected, I didn't end up finishing the Hero's Journey templating. Luckily, my pre-coding produced more than enough words.
