I've learned by trial and error that at least Firefox is still able to create a partial backup of the tiles/ web links saved in New Tab Tools.
Chrome, as previously noted here, is now unable to create a zip file backup at all. It creates a .txt file which cannot be used to restore NTT when it is broken (which is now frequent).
However when using the Firefox backup, many of the tiles once saved are missing from the back up, and I have no idea why. These are all recent problems that did not exist in my many years of using NTT.
Again, New Tab Tools is by far and away my favorite and most heavily relied upon browser extension.
Is it still being monitored or updated or fixed up by the developer?
I will REALLY miss it if it becomes unusable.
