zh_CN: Apply common translation for 'open with' for consistency #97

Closed Artoria2e5 closed 8 years ago

In windows and various FOSS platforms, 'open with' is translated as 打开方式, literally 'method to open'. That's what users get accustomed with. This commit, along with the following one, tries to apply this convention, both to menu items and to the program name.

Translating the program name is done for consistency. Normally I don't do that, but for this particular program it sounds better to do so, given that the phrase is so common...

@Cye3s what do you think about this?

I vote no, because "Firefox" is not translated into Chinese word "火狐", "Windows" is not translated into Chinese word "窗口". And most addons did not translate their names.

In my opinion, "Open with" is an addon name, like a brand, if we translated it to "打开方式", as Arthur2e5 say: "the phrase is so common".

But if we merge this commit, the addon still looks fine to me, I think the new word will not confused our user. It`s up to you, darktrojan.

Hmm. So you are saying that the menu called "Open with..." can be translated, but not the extension name? Anyway “打开用…” is overly non-Chinese, 我的老伙计[a]。

as Arthur2e5 say: "the phrase is so common".

By saying "so common" I am talking about user familiarity. Users don't consider the menu "Open with..." a special name, and in English we can capitalize it like "Open With" to make it a name while still keeping the what-it-is part. Should we prefer the familiarity part to the "looks like a name" part when translating to Chinese?

My current handling of this is adding some quotes (and 拓展, the Chinese word for extension) when necessary, e.g.:

<!ENTITY openwith-linkplaceholder.label "“打开方式”链接项目">
<!ENTITY openwith-display-toolbarhelp "要在工具栏或菜单面板上添加“打开方式”,请打开菜单面板并点击“定制”。">
<!ENTITY openwith-datacollection.optin "提交匿名用户数据以帮助改进“打开方式”拓展。">

This is not done to all occurrences of "Open With" as an extension name in the text, but that can be solved easily by an additional commit (and rebasing, or there will be too many pointless commits in this PR..).

PS: Windows OS is more commonly translated as “视窗”操作系统, I guess.

Note a: “我的老伙计” (oh my old friend) is an example of the "translation tone" (翻译腔) found (and almost only found, well) in many films imported by CCTV or other national corps. Mimicking such style of speech is often considered as a kind of humor.

I am with @Arthur2e5, as many users are got accustomed to the certain translation, the problem is that they will not consider the new translation as some kind of 'innovation', instead, they may think this is a translation flaw. In addition, the goal of the translating is to attempt to remove the barrier between each unique language. The English-like Chinese translation will confuses many potential users, even prevent them from using the software.

OK, Arthur2e5 is right, I merge the commit myself and test on Firefox, it looks better. As we all agree now , just merge the commit and release it :-)

Let me do some quote fixes...

Rebased, with fixup. And pushed with the Force.
