Can't install (bricked?) #34

Hey! So I tried flashing Linux on the ihost. I turned maskrom mode on (green flashing light) downloaded all the drivers after that I opened the flash tool and I put in the Linux for ihost image. There are two variants on the forum for flashing I first used the Chinese version because I didn’t saw the other one until later. The chine version failed flashing and now the lights are red. After that I discovered the English and newer version of the flash tool but it wouldn’t want to go into maskrom mode. After a bit of thinkering it’s in maskrom mode but it keeps failing to flash or do anything whatsoever. Can someone please help me with this? ? It has been like this for months now I really want it to be working again. Thanks in advance for all the help

Update after reddit post.

Yeahh thanks I came across this project and I've tried to install it.. But there's a problem after I've flashed the SD card (Rufus and balena) and put the SD card in. I tried to short the pins for mask mode with a paperclip for 5s and put the power cable in. The blue power button turns on and the front light keeps breathing red.it does the same when powered on without an SD card. i've tried it multiple times but it doesn't do anything. What am I doing wrong?

Are you trying to the ihost linux? or HAOS?

You cannot use the RKDevTool to install HAOS its not compatible, but you have 2 options:

  1. Use RKDevTool to Erase the internal eMMC (on Advanced page) You can then directly boot HAOS image from SD Card
    1. Use a paper clip to short maskrom for approximately 3-5secs AFTER Poweron Use SD Card with boot.img (from 11.2 release). The LED should change to blue after about ~5mins when completed flashing. Timing is important here, too long and the emmc wont be able to flash as it hasnt initialized, too short and you will prob get MaskROM again.

You can't brick this device. rkdeveloptool is complete rubbish, its possibly an issue with the tool.

Try #2 from my post above. I also didnt mention but you can solder a bridge across the maskrom pins and it will always boot from SD Card only. Which you can then install HAOS image to sd card and it will boot.

See the wiki for more details!

Heyy thank you all so much for your support. But it still doesn't work I've tried to reset the emmc memory but it doesn't do anything. in fact every single function in rkvdev doesn't do anything it only generates an error that it can't retrieve the flash ID. I also tried installing haos again by SD card shorting the pins for 3,4,5 seconds after power on and it doesn't work... I've tried so many times using two different sd cards. The only thing I can see is that it doesn't enter maskrom mode but that's probably because of the SD card inserted so nothing to do with shorting the pins. I can't get anything to work.. Plz can someone help me even further 🙂

This is how it looks for now, only red light breathing. Sd card installed, connected to power. I tried shorting the pins and then plug in the power cable wait between 3-5 seconds. I tried turning it off with the power button and after that shorting the pins and press the power button again and wait between 3-5 seconds. With both waiting for 5-10 min.

The rockchip tools require you to load loader image first before anything works, then it may work or probably it will still cause you issues. You can find it at link below https://github.com/darkxst/ha-operating-system/tree/ihost/rk_loader

Otherwise connect the USB power cable to your computer. After haos starts booting you will get a debug console, that you can connect to with putty via serial COM port or /dev/ttyACM0. But see the wiki for details.

the red flashing light is quite normal when haos is running. Until you install the integration for controlling it it will always flash red.

Maskrom is in the BootROM(read-only) you can't damage this, if it doesnt go to maskrom then it has booted the sd card and you can check this with the debug console.
