Searching one entity, but returning another #49

Hi,

For the sake of efficiency, we've organised our code in such a way that we use the DataTablesRepository based on one entity (Petition), but we return a DataTablesOutput based on a different entity (PetitionResponse), with a subset of fields.

The project is open source, you can find the service that tries to get the data here: https://github.com/gov-ithub/petitii/blob/feature/pet-84_add_search_to_tables/src/main/java/ro/petitii/service/PetitionServiceImpl.java#L195

When using the DataTables to display all the data (nothing in the search box), it works fine. However, when I try to search, it returns a DataTablesOutput with no rows, but containing the following error: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Unable to locate Attribute with the the given name [petitionerName] on this ManagedType [ro.petitii.model.Petition]

That makes sense, because the field names in the frontend are those of PetitionResponse and they don't match the field names in the Petition object.

However, when I remove searching on the non-existent fields from the frontend, it still doesn't search, it throws another exception (this time uncaught):

Do you have any idea why the search does not work (in both cases) and how could I make it work?

I've not looked at this in any depth, however to find the real error you'll need to debug it some, as javax.persistence.RollbackException: Transaction marked as rollbackOnly` is hiding/masking it. Inspecting the exception at runtime should reveal the culprit.

Hi! At first sight, I do not see anything obvious. Would it be possible to run the project?

Note: you should be able to use the Converter argument in DataTablesOutput<R> findAll(DataTablesInput i, Specification<T> a, Specification<T> p, Converter<T, R> c);, to convert from Petition to PetitionResponse.

If you get the project from GitHub, the branch in my link, you just have to copy application.yml.template to application.yml in the same folder and setup a database and an email account (there are config placeholders between [[]] in the file, the app is kind of a ticketing system, it gets emails and then you can create petitions from the emails).

I will implement the Converter, I've had a version with one, but I had the same error. Also, I didn't know what the second specification (p) is supposed to be and I was just passing null. What should I put there, what's it for?

Same behaviour, it works if I don't search, it crashes when I search. I don't see any mention of DataTables in the stacktrace, but that is probably hidden by the way the framework(s) work:

Ok, I built the datatables project from source as a dependency to my project and I've found the error, it occurs at line 74 of DataTablesRepositoryImpl and says: org.hibernate.QueryException: Expression to CAST cannot be an entity : petition0_.registration_no [select generatedAlias0 from ro.petitii.model.Petition as generatedAlias0 where ( ( 1=1 ) and ( ( ( 0=1 ) or ( lower(cast(generatedAlias0.regNo as string)) like :param0 escape :param1 ) ) or ( lower(generatedAlias0.subject) like :param2 escape :param3 ) ) ) and ( ( generatedAlias0.responsible=:param4 ) and ( generatedAlias0.currentStatus in (:param5, :param6) ) ) order by generatedAlias0.deadline asc]

Looks like I was trying so search a string into a whole entity instead of an entity's property. regNo is an entity, which translates into a table, we need to search into regNo.number, which actually translates into a table column. My bad, sorry.

So now I need to convert backwards, from DataTablesInput based on PetitionResponse, to one based on Petition. I've made sort of a hack like this:

       input.getColumns().replaceAll(column -> {
            switch (column.getData()) {
                case "regNo":
                    column.setData("regNo.number");
                    break;
                case "petitionerEmail":
                    column.setData("petitioner.email");
                    break;
                case "petitionerName":
                    column.setData("petitioner.lastName");
            }
            return column;
        });

Two questions and I'll leave you alone:

  1. Is there a more elegant way to do this built in, like we use the Converter class in the other direction?
  2. What's the difference between the preFilteringSpecification and the additionalSpecification?

Glad you found the issue! I don't know if we could catch that kind of error, in order to display a more meaningful message.

  1. I don't think there is (at least currently) another way to do that, besides from changing the data attributes in the client of course (by using petitioner.lastName instead of petitionerName in the Datatables definition)

  2. preFilteringSpecification is applied in the count query to get the total number of elements (the recordsTotal field). That allows you to "hide" some entities from the client, based on permissions for example.
