On OSX, I like to do housekeeping with tabs and scroll through my giant list and 'X' out tabs that aren't needed any longer. The scroll bar overlaps with about half of the 'X', making it harder to click. Not sure what kind of solution would be desirable, as changing OS scroll bar behaviour sounds rough, and moving the 'X' more to the left would be less visually appealing, but maybe only when scrolling?
The normal scroll seems thin enough, but when I mouse over the scroll bar, or near it, it gets really wide.
You could always use BetterTouchTool. Three finger tap for middle click and then tap anywhere on the desired tab or another gesture bound to 'command' + 'w' for the active tab.
