Original idea
Our original idea in the first proposal was
"A P2P open betting marketplace within constrained communities (constrained to top 20 & ivy league institutions). It will allow users to create an arbitrary bet, assign verifiers, and bet using tokens (which can be cashed out or cashed in)."
We are mostly staying true to our original idea of an open P2P betting marketplace, with slight modifications in the implementation related to laws around betting in the state (cash-in, cash-out).
MVP Progress?
We have a working prototype with most features from the original designs implemeneted already. Other than implementing verifiers for bets, and login (oauth) most of our remaining work will be based on the feedback we received during our demo.
How is it different?
There's no real cash implementation in our project due to restriction and uncertainity around the legality of the activity.
Still happy with direction?
Yes, the solution, with planned modifications, is for the most part what we wanted to implement from the start.
What do you wish went differently?
We wish we were fully able to implement our solution and allow cash-ins and cash-outs with actual money.
Feedback
What feedback from last term do you think is relevant and interesting to incorporate. List your feedback broadly and label them with how they stack up for your vision. These may already be in ZenHub but after this discussion they should be.
- 🔥 Responsiveness. Our bet details page and the home page were slow in responding to live changes like increasing odds, or new bet creation. One of our main focus this term is decreasing this response time.
- 🍦 OAuth. Implementing a login authentication system to verify a user's status as a student at one of our supported institutions is another goal of ours.
Questions
- Will users understand how our app works? How much work do we need to put into building product tutorials and having in-app explanations? How can we make our app intuitive to understand for beginners?
- What are the most popular use cases for the app? Between college friend groups? In a fraternity? Wtihin the classroom? In the office?
- Will users be able to manipulate betting via reverse engineering the odds adjusting algorithm? How can we prevent this?
- How can we monetize the app? Would sponsors be willing to pay for a betting question?
- Would users feel comfortable recommending this app to their friends/family, or would it be too taboo?
Answers
- Conduct a campus survey at Dartmouth
- Conduct user interviews with a variety of groups at Dartmouth, including fraternity members, faculty, athletes, off-campus students, etc.
- Speak with people who have experience in creating a betting app, such as Loren from Parlay (who we have already spoken to)
- Collect user data from within the app such as buttons clicked, screen time, etc.
- Poll beta users of the app
- Follow up with those who expressed interest at the fall Technigala (we have an email list)
Vision
Our vision is that every person on campus uses Arena to vote for what they truly believe in, whether just for entertainment or to actually express themselves.
Feedback Analysis
The feedback that we have received till now hasn't really changed the direction of our project, other than a few technical improvements relating to speed and design.
Pivot/Adjustment
A pivot on our project could be allowing betting on different college sports competitions like the ivy league.

- OAuth: we seem to keep running into errors with the full authentication flow to verify dartmouth student status using school email.
