T1 Summary and User Testing

Summary

Our user testing revolved around a guided gameplay session. We showed users how to play the game, and observed their actions while answering any questions that came up.

Observations

The observations showed that people enjoyed playing the game, even in its alpha state. We noticed that it kept people interested across many age groups. Players also enjoyed the visuals of the game. From the art style to the ragdoll effects, there were no negative comments. Players had slight problems figuring out the controls, as we provided controllers with different layouts. We hope to solve this issue by providing visual aids in the game that are not controller specific.

Analysis

We can not do numerical analysis, as we did not collect hard data. Instead, we opted to collect feedback from players based on their comments on the game. We found that the players want a clear way to tell what they should be doing at each stage. We need to show them the main gameplay loop, while teachingthe supporting mechanics such as the gadgets or rules of the system. Additionally, adding more ways to interact with the other players was a point of interest.

Notes To Future Us

The next steps should be to round out the features to let the game be played without our supervision. This includes the hub area with a tutorial, a round end screen, and some sort of progression. After that, we can focus on improving the gameplay, either by new features, maps, characters, etc.

TeamWork

Our team has been working great. We are all interested in the success of the project.

What has been working well?

Given the nature of working on a video game, there is always a way for people to contribute. They range from very artistic to very technical, with plenty in between. Due to this, we have found it easy to divide work amongst ourselves.

What has not?

No notable problems. Things have been going well.

Great progress this term! Looking forward to seeing the onboarding and team features next term. I wonder how to make the game feel more collaborative overall. Maybe there are different things you can do to help each other? And then considering the awards, so each player gets a badge. Some ideas of badges: most seeds collected, most miles traveled, highest jumper, etc. where they are a mix of relevant and irrelevant things they players did.
