Show thumbnails of the tab's content #144

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
There are some other extensions like Panorama, Tab Sugar, TooManyTabs, etc.
that show a thumbnail of the tab's content in some way.

Personally, I think thumbnails take up a lot of space and don't really help
much (I might even go so far as to say that they hinder, because parsing a
thumbnail is harder than parsing a favicon/title).

Nonetheless, some users may want this feature, so I should consider adding it
in as an option. It'll be low priority though, for the reason mentioned above.

Thank you considering this despite your personal views. I truly appreciate it.

Cheers

Of course. I want to make Tab Organizer the absolute best tab management
extension possible, so naturally that means taking other people's needs and
desires into account.

Though, I don't have infinite motivation/time/energy, so unfortunately that
means some requests need to wait a long time, or might never be done. But I do
try to include things if other people want them, as evidenced by the many
options in the Options page.

I just found your extension (which so far seems to be the best tab management
extension by a country mile!) and had a thought about this.

What about showing the thumbnail for a tab on mouse hover? Solves the problem
of taking up a lot of space. Or perhaps a way of temporarily bringing a tab to
the front a little like Aero Peek in Windows 7?

For now I'm just putting the popup off to the side and clicking tabs to switch
through them (trying to trim down 100+ tabs I've opened in research today).

Yes, that was my thought as well: showing it on mouse hover. I know that won't
satisfy everybody who wants this feature, but it'd probably be better than what
we have right now.

The problem is twofold:

1) My motivation for this project has plummeted close to 0 for some time now.
Although there are quite a few things I would like to add, and bugs to fix, Tab
Organizer fulfills my needs well enough that I simply do not feel a great need
to work on it like I used to.

2) Infrastructure. Given the way Chrome works, I suspect it will be somewhat
tricky to get thumbnails working *at all*, let alone designing the UI for it.
The UI is relatively easy compared to the infrastructure.

I don't really have a problem with others working on the project (it is open
source, after all), but nobody has stepped up, and I haven't asked anybody to.
