Seeking Use Cases for a 'Git for Tabular Data' #37

Closed flyingzumwalt closed 8 years ago

flyingzumwalt commented 8 years ago

Were you excited about the features in last year's dat beta? Did you import any tabular data into dat and get excited about the possibilities? Do you have use cases for putting your tabular data into a 'Git for Tabular Data'? If you do, please chime in.

When & Where: Participate in the Discussion

We're going to have an open discussion about these use cases on google hangouts. This call is open to anyone who has use cases to offer/discuss. You are also welcome to listen if you're just curious.

If you plan to participate, please add a comment on this ticket so we know to expect you.

Time: Tuesday 01 March 3:00 PM EST Location: Google Hangout Event Watch the Video on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XUYxon29TE

Notes: Notes on Use Cases for Dat Jawn

We will (try to) record the call and post the recording YouTube for future reference.

What we will be discussing

While the main dat team focuses on syncing files & directories, a group of coders in Philadelphia is working on the special case of tabular data (rows and columns like CSV or TSV). Our initial goal is to revive all of the features that were in the dat beta. For more info about this effort, look at jawn on github In order to get this right, we need lots of use cases to use as reference.

To get this started, let's do an open Hangout. @flyingzumwalt will moderate.

I'm interested, and pretty flexible on scheduling. I have some open government data use cases that I can share. Maybe @waldoj has some too

sethvincent commented 8 years ago

I'm super interested! I've been working on this project: http://editdata.org / http://github.com/editdata

Right now it lets people edit csv/json files from their computer or github.

Adding dat as a data source is one of the eventual goals.

totes interested

What about Non Tabular Data?

I've been getting questions about non-tabular data (XML, JSON, Binary files) so I've added a page to the jawn project wiki:

What about Non Tabular Data?

I can participate.

flyingzumwalt commented 8 years ago

I'll be participating and will facilitate/host. I'm working on some info to frame the discussion.

chrpr commented 8 years ago

I should be able to participate.

chadfennell commented 8 years ago

I'll be joining the hangout as well.

flyingzumwalt commented 8 years ago

I've scheduled a Hangout On Air for this call. If you're able to connect to the hangout a few minutes early, please do - there tend to be 10-15 minutes of A/V confusion at the beginning of these calls, and sometimes a weird delay that takes a few minutes to go away.

Link & Time/Date info at the top of this issue under "When & Where".

max-mapper commented 8 years ago

@flyingzumwalt I can't find the actual hangout link to participate, only the view link and the google plus link

flyingzumwalt commented 8 years ago

@maxogden Here's the direct link to the hangout: https://hangouts.google.com/call/pyii3ekvjzhx5otcj6bclwziuea
