Trick out the Makefile #21

Fun stuff, but I'm torn. My strong preference is for Makefiles that act as a sort of guide to the repository, with maximal straightforwardness and minimal clutter. I also like seeing the actual commands run (rather than having them @-ed out). But open to being convinced otherwise!
