i'm used services like that with mixed results. Could be a good idea generator anyways.
Journal logo should be aligned with graphic for journal cover (and website background).
Idea 1: Honeycomb pattern. To emphasize that multiple datasets need to fit together to form a larger whole. Also the social way how a honeycomb is created matches the team nature of Data Science.
Idea 2: Dominoes. They can be seen as small data items that can be connected. And the domino effect emphasizes cause and effect.
Building on the honeycomb idea, what about something like interconnected infinity loops?
Something like this without the man: https://makkada.files.wordpress.com/2013/12/infinity-master-symbol.jpg
hmmm googling reveals the celtic knots are inspired by the same idea: https://uk.pinterest.com/explore/celtic-knots/
Actually on the honeycomb, we have a research program here called NeCTAR (National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources) which uses a honeycomb logo: https://nectar.org.au/ and one of the NeCTAR-funded projects I'm involved with, a linguistic data analysis platform called Alveo, a name derived from the Latin noun “Alveus” which is one of the Latin words for “beehive”.
Anyway, point being that the honeycomb is not irrelevant to data analysis workflows and platforms ... in Australia anyway.
In the meantime we have had someone working on the cover and logo ideas, below are some drafts. Feel free to share any comments, preferences/dislikes you may have and we can take them into account for the final design. It's possible to mix various elements such as take the logo from version V1B and put it on cover version V3B, or use the title font from one cover and put it on another, etc. I didn't make these myself so no feelings will get hurt by being honest :). N.b. there’s a typo in all covers; “Editor” should be “Editors”, will fix later on.
I like the top left (first) cover, but without the logo. The logo doesn't evoke anything in particular. I also like the honeycomb one in the middle of the second row.
I don't like the first row of covers (V1) that much. They are too dark and in a way threatening.
The second row (V2) is much better, but the second and the third are still very dark and also threatening. And the first is maybe a bit too playful and not serious enough.
I like the last row (V3) best, in particular the first and second. They are bright, positive, and modern (even though the second has a bit of a 70s flair to it). The third of the row is a bit too basic and nothing special.
So, I think a combination of the first and second of the third row would be best as a cover.
Logo V1-A looks nice, but as Michel noticed, it doesn't evoke anything particular. Version V1-B looks also nice, but one tries to read it as DOS, which doesn't make any sense.
I like the V2 logos. However, I am not sure whether we should introduce such a shorthand like DASH. "Data Science" is short enough. Also the two honey comb elements are connected in a way that's not natural for honey combs. Could the lower one maybe be attached at the bottom-right edge of the top one, like two properly connected honey combs, and could they contain the entire words "data" and "science"? I think that would be the perfect logo for me then.
The V3 logos are nice too, but one has to look really closely to understand that these are dominoes.
It took a while but here are some updated cover designs with some of the comments taken into acccount. The idea is there are less dark and threatening and less 70s. Let me know what you think!
And here also some update logos, which can be combined with any of the covers.
Logo Draft1 below is new logo based on a honeycomb:
Logo Draft2 is based on the previous V2 but not using an abbrevation anymore and a more natural connection of honeycombs:
Logo Draft3 below is a combination of the infinity sign and a Honey Comb but not using the journal abbreviation:
I like the second cover a lot!
But maybe with the first logo instead of the second.
heh, i like the first cover and logo a lot :)

ok, let's discuss :)
To me, the first cover looks a bit too much like boilerplate. Whereas the second looks fresh, modern, and distinctive.
Is there something particular that you dislike in the second cover?
At least we already agree on the first logo :)
I like the first one because it has a nice clean design, particularly in the area of the journal title. if the positioning of the title was moved up and the underlying boxes removed, or fixed somehow, i would reconsider the second one.
I see your point! The title area is indeed better for the first cover, I now agree.
I like the crispness of the forms of cover 2 better though. In cover 1 everything is a bit blurred, whereas we have these clear and distinctive forms in cover 2.
Now I also realize that cover 1 basically just has a single color. Also cover 2, but there is at least a tiny bit of color variation. In that respect, I liked the earlier covers better, for example the ones including orange in addition to blue.
So, if possible, could we choose cover 1 but with some of the crisper elements of version 2 in the graphics part, and some more color (for example orange)?
Yes, i like the forms in cover 2, but not a big fan of the floating hexagons. i guess i'm more simple when it comes to the colouring, but i willing to see what having some additional colour might look like.
I agree with Michel on cover 1 being more clean and, to me, therefore also more appealing. I also think the floating hexagons really only work if they echo the logo -- and that is less obvious with logo 1. But in general, they look a bit "heavy".
For the record, I also prefer logo 1.
Hi, I thought to also give my opinion on this, I hope that is ok.
Cover - some general considerations: I think the 3 most recent versions are much improved in comparison with the older ones and are nice. I like the first cover despite it being a bit too flashy. It has a simple, clean and colorful design. The second one is very nice as well, but it seems a bit too crowded. The third cover I consider a bit too plain, despite the clear title of the magazine.
Logo: I like the first one most, the intertwined honeycombs. The second one seems a bit too retro. The third logo is nice as well.
One more thing to consider that I forgot: We should make our cover clearly distinct from the existing Data Science journal, in particular the CODATA one (we promised them to choose a different color scheme): http://datascience.codata.org/
But also these:
So we should probably choose a different color than blue (and dark green is taken as well).
Otherwise it seems that I am in the minority with my preference for cover 2. Let's try to get some more opinions, but cover 1 has a clear lead at the moment.
I prefer cover 1 over the others, mostly because of the clean design. Also, the logo (1) is quite nice, though logo 3 is great as well.
I like the colors of cover 2 -which seem a bit more modern than the other two. But overall, the cleanness of cover 1 makes that one look very nice.
And logo 1 has my preference as well.
I like all covers, and I prefer logo 2.
I like cover 1, but logo 1 does not speak much to me. To some extent, logo 2 makes more sense.
I like cover v1, row 2, column 2 if it could have a brighter color. v2 have a bit of a boilerplate feel to them. But if it must be v2, then I choose v2, center (could the lines be sharper though?).
Logo: I like the infty + honeycomb, but it looks too much like a fish. Perhaps flip it?
One consideration v.v. the logo - two adjacent hexagons is the chemical symbol for Napthalene :-) Might look a bit too "organic chem" vs "data science"...
Of the latest set, I prefer the third one. I'd leave off the logos, they're really not adding anything for me. (I particularly dislike the "infinity sign and a Honey Comb" because it looks like it should mean something, but doesn't). What about a stylized "DS" if we must have a logo?
I do still like this one (old 1A I think you were calling it) though the subtitle is I think not easy enough to read and I'd still ditch the logo: https://cloud.githubusercontent.com/assets/20357483/22693708/addfa346-ed44-11e6-92f4-7062d71e67a8.jpg
Here is an updated design of the cover that seemed to have the most consensus, with some of the feedback incorporated. The coloring was changed to stand out more from existing journals, an orange element is added and some elements have been removed to make the cover a bit more 'crisp'.
This works for me!
I like it very much +1

Sounding good! Just for the record, the coloring in the pic above suffered a bit from a pdf to jpg conversion. This one reflects better the intended coloring;
Looks great to me too!
Actually, the only thing I didn't like that much was the green tone of the first image, but this second one looks perfect.
I guess we can close this issue.
We also need a journal logo. We could use designcrowd.com for that.
