Describe cleanup and enhancement

Clean up some of the describe code.

• Add a way to describe just based on metadata, so it works for all objects
• Move describe into its own module since it's somewhat complex
• make generic describe method match args of the custom ones so we can use a macro for both

This sets things up for more detailed describe information for particular objects.
