There's a short description of the dataset on the Portal figshare link, but would it be possible to have a description of the data somewhere, that could be used to introduce the dataset, and some questions you might to ask with it, at the beginning of the workshop? Some information to 'humanize' (small-mammaliize?) the dataset would also be nice - like why aren't there ever any weight measurements for 'DM' - would also be nice.

@skmorgane - any chance you or @gmyenni would have a few minutes to help out with this? If not I can take care of it, but thought that having the real experts involved might be a good idea :smiley:.

I started a data-ecology repo and put in the description from the SQL lessons. Maybe @skmorgane and @gmyenni could update it if it needed it. https://github.com/datacarpentry/data-ecology/

Some ideas of things to add:

links to papers where it was used?
a list of questions you are asking or might be asking with the dataset?
why aren't there weights for certain species, or broadly why is there missing data
and of course, any funny stories about squirrel cannons :)

I'm also going to put 'messy data' in the data-ecology repo while we figure out what version(s) of the messy data would be best to put on Figshare.
