Getting more information about a sediment core/sample in core repository with smartphone #31

As a visitor of the Bremen Core Repository, I'd like to use my smartphone with a barcode/QR code scanner to get more information about a core / sample. I am not only interested in metadata about the sample, but I'd also like to know more about the scientists doing measurements, what funding was used when sample was taken, related scientific articles, and finally which data was already gathered from it!

Implementation should be straight forward: The design of the QR codes for IGSN samples is underway and we will start to label some samples soon (it will be QR code with URL to the IGSN handle using prefix http://igsn.org/). The app can extract the IGSN from it and then use the PID graph to find datasets at PANGAEA (easy), related funding (through PANGAEA, needs some work), related papers can be found through Scholix (IGSN -> Dataset -> Papers),...

Wouldn't it be possible to use Compact Identifiers, so the same labelling system can be re-used for a broader scope?

uschindler commented 6 years ago

What do you mean with compact identifiers?

uschindler commented 6 years ago

I think the IGSN are working on a QR code design, I can post the link. Robert Huber on our side is involved.

mbdebian commented 6 years ago

Putting in the QR code the compact identifier and then use http://identifiers.org to resolve it, that would allow a broader labelling spectrum.

uschindler commented 6 years ago

That would be a possibility, but that's up to the IGSN community. I think they want their name in the label, so they are pushing to use the igsn.org prefix instead of hdl.handle.net.

Both things are actually possible, they can have their logo human visible on the QR code, but use a compact identifier encoded in the QR, this would give their labelling system a lot of flexibility.

This practice could be of interest for one of STFC facilities who produce samples and send them to other facilities. I will mark this issue with "STFC" label to keep it on record.
