Thanks very much Erie - that's very useful. Can you tell us about your system to find out what the problem is? Windows? Which browser? Which version of the browser? Do you have Font Smoothing or ClearType on do you know? ( http://blogs.adobe.com/typblography/2010/09/turning-on-cleartype-on-windows-xp.html ) And are you running on a secure/corporate network or just a simple domestic/office internet connection? Many thanks, David
Thanks Erie. I've done some research: This is a problem where old versions of Google Chrome cannot handle certain Google Fonts. It is rare because the browser auto-updates; looking at our stats it appears to affect 1% to 1.5% of pageviews.
Can you confirm which version of Chrome you're running? Top-right corner menu -> "About Google Chrome". Are you able to update your browser?
Update for @davidread: https://github.com/datagovuk/shared_dguk_assets/commit/ef3e092049ccd055ef893fd647e9f2c0fb2a0f7f solves this problem. We bypass the Google Fonts directory, which is not to be trusted. :-)
@ErieMeyer I suspect this will go live later this week. Still it will be useful to know which version of Chrome caused this problem? Thanks.
Just a heads up that in chrome on a PC, the font is resolving so it's difficult to differentiate between "e" and "c," as well as some other readability issues. Sample:
