How to manage a client project #52

Open jeancochrane opened 5 years ago

jeancochrane commented 5 years ago

Documentation request

It feels like we have some ad-hoc practices that have emerged for managing the full lifecycle of a client project, e.g. kickoff calls, deadline setting, weekly email updates, and post-project retrospectives. Let's immortalize this wisdom in a document in the project-management/ directory so that we can have some consistent standards for managing projects.

Our existing senior staff have all attended management training, and rising Lead Developers will attend the same training. This training yields a lot of useful resources re: navigating power dynamics and managing people (#133) but it doesn't cover specific project management techniques. To that end, @smcalilly found "Shape Up" from the team at Basecamp: https://basecamp.com/shapeup. Looks like a pretty relevant read!

I would like to revive this thread!

smcalilly commented 1 year ago

Agreed. And I don't think we should listen to Basecamp's recommendations (re that book I suggested).

This is a huge undertaking, what would this look like? Maybe we should cut the scope down to project management? That would be useful for me in my current position.

@smcalilly I love the idea of parsing out different threads of this, starting with project management, as it's applicable to the largest number of us. Some additional threads might include client / relationship management and project development and scoping for new and follow on work.
