In Money Counts, Kent Redfield characterizes donors as adopting giving strategies that differ on three dimensions.
Give to legislative leaders vs individual candidates (in other states, this would be party vs individual candidates).
Give on partisan or nonpartisan basis
Give to incumbents or to challengers.
According to Redfield, donors are mainly trying to do two things. Either build relations with legislators in order to more effectively lobby (access) or are trying to affect the outcomes of elections. These strategies are in some conflict.
Would be interesting to characterize donors on donor pages along these dimensions, once we have donor pages.
