Mobility Data Project Feasibility

Through the Development Data Partnership, projects can gain access to mobility data provided by Data Partners. The mobility data is highly disaggregated and accessing, reading, and analyzing this data comes with multiples challenges. This document covers the technical hurdles that may undermine these analyses.

In this proof of concept, we seek to analyze mobility data and measure some economic indicators such as employment trends and economic growth, according to Dong, L., Chen, S., Cheng, Y. et al. Measuring economic activity in China with mobile big data.

It would be important to select countries that have good coverage in official statistics to be able to benchmark these indicators and evaluate our analysis. For this proof of concept, we would focus on 2 countries: Brazil, and Sudan.

This proof of concept has two main objectives:

• Evaluate the technical feasibility in terms of IT infrastructure for both IMF and WB

• Evaluate the potential and reliability of mobile location data to nowcast economic indicators.
