Project Assignment

The Myanmar Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment team is responsible for undertaking macroeconomic surveillance of Myanmar and conducting analytical studies to guide economic policy and development, including the bi-annual Myanmar Economic Monitor. However, published data can be delayed or unreliable, making traditional macroeconomic monitoring a challenge.

  1. Nightlights in Industrial Zones -- monthly trends

  2. Nightlights in Conflict Affected Areas and Non Conflict Affected Areas -- monthly trends Team to give us conflict affected areas that are to be used in the NTL analysis (EAO Control Vs non-EAO control) -- https://specialadvisorycouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/SAC-M-Effective-Control-in-Myanmar-2024-Update-ENGLISH.pdf -- Data Lab to extract controlled regions list from this report and verify it with the team to see if the conflict changed over time.

  3. Conflict affecting mining and public infrastructure works -- have they been disrupted infrastructure projects. Team: It might be possible to identify the mine locations, big ones we should know where the projects are, road going through India Bangladesh, Public Infrastructure might not be exact latitude longitude, areas under tribal control are seeing illicit mining activity Public Infrastructure includes - roads, energy, natural gas exploration, dams.

  4. Energy Sector impact from conflict -- how did electricity availability change over time.

Q: How do we know the relationship between these projects and GDP? The team to think about - What is the size of contribution of these projects to GDP?

What is the timeline? Aka will share the mines Satellite Imagery can also roll over to next MEM or make a separate standalone note, if we can find a partner within the next 1-2 months End of October-Mid November the draft will be released.
