Based on the fact that there are critical bug reports on here from 4 years ago which haven't been responded to, and pull requests from half a year ago which have been ignored, it seems fairly clear to me that this package is falling into disrepair, and I don't think it's overstating it to call this abandonware.
I was wondering if the maintainers would be open to there being new maintainers? And if not, perhaps there could be a fork of the package to create a new, fully working version.
