We've published a snapshot, but are confused about whether anyone can actually

Okay. It seems that we are in there successfully. Next step is to make a 
release, and see if it shows up in Maven central.

Made a release, it did not show up. The snapshot is there, but not the release. 
Also can't log in, so now lost in Sonatype hell.
