• Great find of another Minard classic
• Because white Europeans never thought highly of themselves before. It's (sadly) funny to see it reflected in the scale of the map. And of course, it's always another excuse to watch this clip again.
• Your takeaways are definitely not what the author intended, but once we publish the visualization it is up to the audience to draw conclusions. I think all your arguments are on point

Grammar of graphics

• Unique dataset with an accurate depiction of the data
• For facet labels, do the index values have text descriptions or could you apply something more meaningful? Something like "Very poor", "Poor", "Wealthy", etc. The numeric labels are just somewhat meaningless other than increasing categories of wealth.
• While I agree a muted color palette is appropriate, beware combining problematic palettes. You mix red and blue in this graph, which is one of the most common colorblindnesses. Next time consult a guide such as Color Brewer to choose an optimal palette.

Noted the fact about red-blue colour-blindness! Will use Color Brewer henceforth - I was going off a random tweet! Thank you :)
