There a many words as static text in the source files. Also the menu
entries come from the (static) file "layersmenu-horizontal-1.txt".

Why not put all static words to the <language_LE>.inc.php file so a
translator only have to edit ONE file and all text is translated?

I can provide you a german_DE.inc.php in near future, so adding "MWSt (DE)"
with "16.00" % as tax rate will be nice then :) (19.00% from 01.01.2007)!

Hi Heart1010,

your very much correct, there are still many static words in Simple Invoices,

the effort to make Simple Invoices translatable started not long ago(before 
that all
words were static) - this is still very much a work-in-progress.

I plan to make the entire app translatable soon, with each release a bit more 
of the
app gets translatable

If you could start work on a German translation I would very much appreciate 
it, just
grab the latest english_UK file and update it with the German words an email it
through to me.

also the strucutre of the lang files is about to change

now all variables in the lang files will be in the format $lang followed by the
word(or a description)

ie:
$lang_edit = "Edit";
$lang_biller = "Biller";

Hello, I read the article on simpleinvoices at Linux.com and realised that this 
is 
exactly what I was looking for. Great stuff!

But (and here comes the reason why I write to this topic about translation) the 
languages files seem to be done in a way which makes me wonder about the 
scalability and ease of translating this. I work as a translator. I would 
expect to 
find a .po file or any other format which can be easily handled in a XLIFF 
editor 
and translated with the help of a translation memory. Are there any plans to 
move

the reason were not using .po files is that .op support (aka gettext) is not 
enabled
by default in most php installs (as far as im aware) and we have enought trouble
getting people to get pdf and reports working - adding another thing to 
configure
will be just to much :(

thanks for the quick reply! I have started with the Czech translation and... I 
have 
a version now I'll try to proofread/correct with a fresh test installation. I 
hope 
to send a polished version here next week. I'll also try to do the help files, 
if 
they are not very long.

About the .po files: I have worked with Drupal and it seems to have a nice way 
of 
dealing with languages and translations (using .po); perhaps Simple Invoices 
could 
use a similar solution, including a string translation interface.

As to the import, I have used Heartsome XLIFF Editor, a paid translation 
programme 
which uses TMX - translation memory. This means that any new versions will be 
easier to translate because the programme will handle exact matches and suggest 
fuzzy matches. There are similar programmes for free, for instance Open 
Language 
Tool XLIFF Translation Editor from Sun. Another possibility could be OmegaT 
(also 
free). However, these are "professional" translation tools, so they are 
sometimes 
not easy and intuitive for occasional translators.

I'll try to describe the process:

I am using Heartsome translation editor (screenshots at heartsome.net ). 

Initially I failed to import the .inc file and convert it into the XLIFF 
format. 
After some experiments I discovered that using the Javascript import filter the 
programme separated the information correctly. I translated the strings, 
converted 
back to the original format (and renamed the file to czech_CS). I added the 
language into the config file (this is perhaps something that should be done 
from 
the UI).

For those interested, I can provide a file like the one below which could be 
used 
by people wanting to translate in, let say, OpenOffice Calc in any of the 
existing 
Simple Invoice languages.

Hello, I'll drop my suggestions and observations as I polish the translation 
into 
Czech.

1. I have named the file in the config.php like this: $language = "czech_CS". 
What 
are the guidelines for naming these files?

2. I created a new date format: $config['date_format']  = 'j.n.Y'; #CZ format 
just 
date (i.e. 27.1.2007). Will these things be configurable from the UI?

3. I have not found a way of setting the correct behaviour for decimal comma. 
Czech 
uses decimal comma, i.e. 1,5 is one-and-a-half. Dots are used as thousand 
separators. Other languages might have similar issues.

4. I changed the currency symbol to "Kč ". (I had to add a space after I found 
out 
that it joins the number without it.) However, we usually write the currency 
symbol 
after the amount, i.e. 145,50 Kč. (and the decimal units are always two-digit 
here, 
even when 145,00 Kč).

5. Some or most Slavonic languages have various plurals with numerals. To 
illustrate:

I have 2 apples.      Mám 2 jablka.
I have 3 apples.      Mám 3 jablka.
I have 4 apples.      Mám 4 jablka.
I have 5 apples.      Mám 5 jablek. <- notice the change from "jabkla" to 
"jablek"
I have 6 apples.      Mám 6 jablek.

This happens when having the Age: 5 days ... (i.e. the form of "days" in Czech 
and 
other languages changes according to the preceding number.

6. More of a localization question: the local tradition is to number invoices 
in 
one of the following ways:

1. by order, usually with chronological data, for instance the (Windows) 
program I 
use (and hope to drop soon :) ) uses 20070001, 20070002, etc., so people know 
which 
year the invoice was issued and the same number is also used as a reference 
number 
by the client when making a payment.

2. random and unique number, which conceals the information about how many 
invoices 
has the biller issued so far (if a customer gets an invoice 20070001 in March, 
it 
might look strange).

One other question: the file has a comment /* Dont translate anything below 
here 
*/ - should I really leave that untranslated, i.e. in English?

Another question: there seem to be some strings (during redirection, in some 
other 
places, warnings in red) which did not appear during translation or appear 
untranslated, for instance 

/index.php?module=system_defaults&view=manage
/index.php?module=documentation/inline_docs&view=about
/index.php?module=documentation/inline_docs&view=inline_credits
/index.php?module=options&view=sanity_check
/index.php?module=options&view=backup_database
/index.php?module=options&view=database_sqlpatches

etc. 

Another thing I encountered is that when abbreviating, for instance in the 
invoice 
Quick View, the mechanism breaks words, so that instead of cutting after 
Příliš in 
the Czech test phrase "Příliš žluťoučký kůň úpěl ďábelské ódy", 
it cuts in the word 
itself leading to "Příli&scaron..."

I have attached an image of what it looks like. The "Příliš žluťoučký 
kůň úpěl 
ďábelské ódy is a phrase used for testing the encoding of Czech characters. 
A 
language switcher at the top of the page would be great, for instance for 
debugging 
the translations.

It would be great if one could also translate this (I mean in a systematic way,

As I used a translation programme, I translated it all (the programme ignores 
the 
comments), which doesn't matter. A lot of the string at the end were translated 
automatically anyway, because they were 100 % matches. It's there in the TMX 
and 
can be reused.

This is probably something that .po has, i.e. handling of plurals. I'll have to 
study this in more detail.

Related to this is another question of grammar: It seems that in some places, 
e.g. 
the button at the bottom of the forms for adding a new invoice, there are two 
strings, "Save" and "Invoice" put together to form "Save Invoice". The problem 
is 
that Save = Uložit, Invoice = Faktura (in the nominative case), while "Save 
Invoice" is "Uložit fakturu" (notice the "u" at the end replacing the "a" - 
accusative case).

Again, something like this could be configurable through an UI, like in Drupal. 
It 
seems to me more and more that some features and code from Drupal 
(localisation, 
admin settings, etc.) would bring a great advance to Simple Invoices. When 
thinking 
about fellow Czech users, they would be expecting either something 
pre-configured 
(a preconfigured Czech version of the config.php) or the possibility to 
configure 
everything through a UI. The third possibility could be to have install 
instructions for each language and accounting/invoicing situation.

Local name for Czech is čeština... so cestina_czech.inc.php? The testing 
version is 
attached, definitive version next week together with the help.

You might be wondering why do I want to translate everything, all strings and 
warnings. The situation is that Simple Invoices is the right solution at the 
right 
time for many people in the Czech Republic, like myself, using Linux. Not the 
easiest because of Apache and MySQL and PHP configuration, but still better 
than 
using Calc or Writer to handle invoices. 

For many people there are no other applications: they don't need CRM, ERP, BI 
or 
whatever. Efforts by an open-source support association to fill the gap have 
resulted in a bizarre solution: they were donated the source code of an 
accounting 
application running under DOS, so they suggest people use DOSemu and FreeDOS to 
run 
it. It has 120 pages of documentation. For most people this is an overkill.

Getting Simple Invoices to run *completely* and seamlessly in Czech is 
obviously 
the precondition. And if it works for Czechs, it also works for people in 
Slovakia, 
both languages are mutually understandible, translating from Czech to Slovak is 
almost automatic. Other Central and Eastern European languages (missing on the 
list) might follow.

The benefits for Simple Invoices might be: more users and potential 
contributors 
and developers.

One last question: the invoicing population here is split into two parts: one 
part 
charges VAT, the other part charges no VAT -  they are not registered and not 
required by law to do so (on the basis of lower annual revenue). Could there be 
a 
radio button in the settings to switch the whole taxes handling off? Setting a 
tax 
to O% is not an option - the whole tax part must not appear on such invoices 
(no 
word TAX, etc.).

Hey Roman,

1 - ive just removed the ppp stuff - legacy from another program i wrote

2 - re the attached image
- in the 'quick view' of the invoices its supposed to do that 'for consulting 
style
invoices '- in the code its set to cut the description on an consulting invoice 
item
down to 20 characters (no matter if its in the middle of a word)
- in the proper print preview it doesnt get cut down

3 - re redirection - got it now - will try to make this made translatable soon

4 - re 200700 .. shouldn't have any problems with upgrading

5 - re configs via GUI
- yep that would be great - and its on the plan - one day :)

6 - cestina_czech.inc.php has been added, thanks

7 - re czech version - feel free to translation ReadMe.english_UK.html into 
czech -
hopefully that would help the czech users get it installed

8 -re Save Invoice - thanks for pointing this out - i'll make it one variable

- a work around is - set default tax to no tax - then create a custom invoice
template and remove any reference to tax

10 - that freedos situations does sounds a little weird - hopefully we can make
Simple Invoices good enough to fill the gap

Hello, 

Here are the results of my attempt to create a Czech specific invoice template 
for 
non-payers of VAT (neplátci DPH). The result needs some customization and 
tweaking, 
some values are hardcoded, some depend on custom fields ('Invoice due date', 
for 
instance). The template can be adapted to other languages, but it is not an 
easy 
process.

The PDF example attached has been edited by PDFEdit to delete sensitive data 
(payment details...) so there are some things that do appear nin reality, but 
are 
not shown on the invoice sample :)

How do I use the template: 

1. I use it only as a preview in a browser. If I need to print it I print it 
from 
the browser. For this I have modified the browser settings (margins, header and 
footer text). (The only browser-info I left was "Page x of y").

2. The template is done in such a way as to fit the customer address into a DL 
envelope window. 

3. PDF generation is done through the browser as well, because the PDF 
generation 
in simple invoices did not work as I expected. (It has problems with fonts, 
Czech 
characters, layout, it creates an extremely long file name...)

4. I did not use an image logo, because it came out in a bad resolution on the 
printout. Instead I used a text logo, just letters.

It works on my local installation: putting files in /lang/it-it and selecting 
italian
from Lang Preferences.

Not sure if this is the right place...

Another issue on this subject is translation of lines with variables in them.

Say we have a line as such (just as an example):

# Are you sure you wish to delete invoice {$invoice.id} and all of it's 
payments?

The translatable version would read something like:

# {$LANG.confirm_delete_inv1} {$invoice.id} {$LANG.confirm_delete_inv2}

But this is hardly ideal, as the translator would possibly not understand 
exactly how
these lines were being used without looking at the templates.

A better solution would be something similar to how sprintf() works. The line 
could
then look something like this:

# {$LANG.confirm_delete_inv_and_pay[{$invoice.id}]}

And the translation would be:

# $LANG['confirm_delete_inv_and_pay'] = "Are you sure you wish to delete 
invoice %s
and all of it's payments?";

A solution similar to this is a necessity if we are to make the entire system
translatable, as it will shorten the tranlation files by a lot in the long run.

After doing some digging, followed by research I learnt a little bit about 
Smarty.
It's quite awesome to be honest. Although a tad overwhelming to the newcomer.

The thing I read about is modifiers. I noticed you can used php functions 
directly.
More to the point, you can do this:

# $LANG['the_string'] = "Todays magic numbers are %s and %s!";

# {$LANG.the_string|sprintf:"one":"five"}

Result: Todays magic numbers are one and five!

And if you need variables, just do:

{$LANG.the_string|sprintf:$variable1:$variable2}

Seems what I was looking for is already implemented! Awesome!
