I am using an old version from the kubuntu repo. Tried installing the latest version from the website. It would not install

Had to re-install the old version

I don't know if the signatures automatically update from the repo

Does clamav run in the background and scan live

anon-private commented 6 years ago

Dave, I find that clamtk requires many repeated clicks to start.Used under kubuntu ver 14.04

Hi,

How so? By default, it takes two clicks for any icon to respond. If you want one click, go into Settings and change the setting.

anon-private commented 6 years ago

In my case, I have to click many times, over and over again.

Hello, Does clamtk check for rootkits?

Does clamtk check for rootkits?

You should use rkhunter and/or chkrootkit for rootkit scanning. See the earlier post here.

Dave I was trying to update the virus signatures for clam when an error reading the database message appeared on the screen and advised installing a patch from database.clamav.net. This site does not exist. Please can you advise

@anon-private , Hi, please send more information. What error did you see? Can you post a screenshot? What distro are you using?

Also, I appreciate you reporting issues, but please open a new issue next time. :)

anon-private commented 6 years ago

Hello,

All I can tell you is that I was updating the signatures and the updating stopped. Then a message appeared: Error reading database, get patch from database.clamav.net. The updating then continued and again stopped, the same message then appeared on the screen. I have clamtk 5.25 installed.

I do not see the outdated antivirus signature message that I saw previously.

I am using manjaro (Plasma, kde). Regards

Does the message look like "getpatch: Can't download daily-101010.cdiff from database.clamav.net" ?

If so, I think this is just a minor issue with server connectivity. Try again later to see if it is resolved.

Looks like everything's working then:

main.cvd is up to date (version: 58, sigs: 4566249, f-level: 60, builder: sigmgr)
daily.cld updated (version: 24725, sigs: 2004847, f-level: 63, builder: neo) bytecode.cld is up to date (version: 322, sigs: 90, f-level: 63, builder: neo)

Luckily, we were right - just a brief server issue and back to normal. Don't worry about clamd - that's for people running ClamAV as a daemon or in conjunction with a mail server.

Also, you can update sigs through the GUI (clamtk) if you want to.

Anyway, all's well then.

Dave, As always, you have been very helpful. When you say I can update through the GUI, I assume that you mean using the 'update assistant'. Best wishes

Hi,

Technically the update assistant changes who downloads the signatures. If you want to do them yourself as a user, change to that option. However, lots of Linux distributions have updates automatically enabled, so the default setting is fine. There is a separate button.
