Project scope, longer term #35

I mentioned this to @gtwright in an email, but wanted to put it in an issue so everyone can consider this as we ponder #31 and #32.

Since I first made the initial prototype and showed it to Rob, the scope of the project has changed in a few ways, some of which are aspirational, but I think they may have some bearing on the platform decisions we make at this stage.

Current developments

Aspirations

We can develop the search tools independent of the content aspirations, but I think it's worth knowing that they exist. @robdeemer, feel free to chime in if I left anything out or got it wrong.

Hey all,

First, everything looks spot on, David. Our hope is that this large database will be the first of several that will be housed under the current composerdiversity.com address along with static resource content.

Second, I can't thank you all enough for helping with this project. The site has only been public since June 1st and already it's become a resource that professionals and educators have begun to use across the country. I'm attaching an image of a Tweet that a public school teacher posted today about her students using the site to discover women composers…it's a pretty big deal within the musical community and your help is so very appreciated by me and all those who will be using it. Thank you!!!

Sincerely, Rob Deemer

  • Rob and team are beginning research on LGBTQIA+ composers for inclusion in this or a related db.
  • We have wind band repertory databases (see #25 https://github.com/davemacdo/composer-diversity/issues/25) that could be included in a related tool, possibly one that links to the current composer search.

Aspirations

  • Ongoing research surveys and reports on things like institutional representation and programming.
  • Static(ish) resource content.

We can develop the search tools independent of the content aspirations, but I think it's worth knowing that they exist. @robdeemer https://github.com/robdeemer, feel free to chime in if I left anything out or got it wrong.
