fix Windows path support in utils.lua #169

Hi @davidgranstrom , here's just the commit with the fix for Windows paths. Should I go ahead and close my other request or do you want to continue discussion about how to handle the other commits on that thread? Sorry for the mess!

@sadguitarius Thanks for your patience. I just tested this and it looks good, so let's merge it!

If it's not too much work I would appreciate if you could separate the other commits into two different PRs, then we can close #167.
