pip install jedi fails with ERROR: No matching distribution found for jedi

Trying to install jedi globally but seems to not be able. It downloads lots of old versions, and fails at version 0.6.0. Any idea, what am I doing wrong? Also, why does it try and download all old versions?

python version is 3.9.9 (both for sudo and user).

It feels like something is broken on your side. (Only 95% sure though, because you are an early 3.9 user). I would be kind of surprised if this was a Jedi issue, since 3.9 has been out for quite a while, 3.10 is already out and no issues have been reported. What's your pip version?

Alright, it probably is the case. It worked some time ago, but I rarely use Python, so I can't tell when it went south. Do you have some idea what to look at?

The error looks kinda like it's an old version of pip or maybe setuptools is failing to interpret the package metadata. It's hard to be sure though. I've just tried installing the version of pip you've got and the version of setuptools from when that was released and yet that installs jedi just fine for me (Python 3.9.9 virtualenv on Ubuntu).

Could you try pip list | grep -P "(pip|setuptools|wheel)" to see what versions of those you have installed?

Separately, I do think it could be worth trying to update them to see if that helps (I find this fixes a myriad of Python package install issues). I suggest creating a fresh virtualenv to test with though, rather than experimenting with your primary system environment!

source venv/bin/activate

# Update pip & related tools
pip install -U pip setuptools wheel

# Install jedi
pip install jedi

Whauh, indeed. It was pip that was old! :+1:

I update my Arch every day, I thought I had everything latest :). After updating pip everything installed in 3 seconds.
