Why is the use of 12V stepper motors mandatory?

I know you aren't actively maintaining and developing the code but I was hoping you could help clarify why using 12V stepper motors are important.

I plan to build my own split-flap display, I already have 5x 5V stepper motors, but came across your instruction document specifically recommending 12V steppers instead. Why is that? Thank you.
