needs to not passthrough when midi-in and midi-out are the same device, otherwise it's passing it back to itself.

The good way to fix this is:

make a new mode called none, which is like passthrough (a no-op) but doesn't pass through
change the default of Multi based on midi_in==midi_out (same device->None, 2 devices -> Passthrough)
