Density optimization #27

Merge the density-along-axis optimization branch. Tested locally.

@mathematicalmichael , I noticed that when the docker actions are triggered on this repository, we get the error "the input device is not a TTY." That doesn't block us from branching or merging, but I don't understand the error. Can you give us some insight?

@davidrmiller #28 should fix it =) that's my bad. didn't have a chance to test it properly. merge that in, update this and any other open-PR branches with main and you should be set.
