Problems with SD-PAL resolution (720x576) #8

Hi guys,

I have the following Problem:

I'm using the AppleTV at a 16:9 SD-PAL-TV via composite connection. So I
use 576i as resolution. I've tried to startup the Ubuntu-LiveDVD with an
external DVD-Drive. First everything went fine. setup_linux_vesafb reported
the right resolution 720x576 and it started up the Live-DVD.

After some time the Desktop showed up, but I can't see a thing, because it
is fragmented. It is really hard to discribe. It looks like the screen is
divided in several lines aprox 10 or 20px high, then the beginning of the
line is black than the normal content starts and the end of the line is
shifted to the next one, and than the rest of the second line is also
black. from top to down the initial black part getting smaller so i have
almost a normal picture at the right button. But this has also no use,
because there seems to be some pixel-line drops or merges so the hole
screen fits at 576px rows, otherwise I would have the double because of the
shifted "lines".

First I thought it was a problem the composite connection, so I hocked up
the atv at a HD-TV via YUV. But there was no change, still the same
picture. After that I switched the atv to 720p and started up Ubuntu again,
everything worked out of the Box as it should, so there seems not to be a
general Problem. Then I thought there is something wrong with the PAL
resolution so I changed to 480i NTSC but it has the same result as 576i.
setup_linux_vesafb reported 720x480, but the screen was torn apart again.

I can't even check which resolution is set, because I can't read anything.

I would be really grateful about some advices how to solve the problem

I've seen this effect with Ubuntu/Mythbuntu LiveCD. Their auto-setup for X11 is
confused about the screen
resolution and there's not much one can do to force a correct setup. I was
lucky in that I was able to mouse
around and get a terminal window open, then was able to run the screen
resolution dialog to set the screen
resolution correctly.

Try the alternate LiveCD, there have been reports of this working to get around
the incorrect xorg settings.
