Well oddly enough I used the same Kingston brand Data Traveler for my install
however it was a 2GB and I was
installing on ATV 2.3. Simply put, it did not work. I had an older Son Micro
Vault thumb drive which is I believe
128mb which I read was too small but tried it anyways. Reformatted went through
the process and sure enough
it worked. No idea why as the Kingston is just 6 months old where as the Sony
is from 2003. Either way, I'm all
set. Funny how Dave mentions not to use the Asian crap-- Kingston reads made in
china right on it and so does
the Sony =) thanks guys!

Spoke to soon. After working for about 25 minutes, the ATV screen is frozen
with grey box and ATV logo with
black around. I have turned ATV off and still it is there.

I have the same issue as in comment #1 with a Kingston brand DataTraveller 8gb
USB
stick. The patchdisk is created but is not recognised by the AppleTV. I am
using
the latest Apple OS and AppleTV versions. Any thoughts appreciated.

Yeah, updated the launcher. I think the issue was in the flash drive.
My stick was 2GB where as the Sony Micro Vault was only 128mb iirc. My
suggestion to
you Mark is trying a different brand and follow the steps you did. Also, they
did not
there was a size limit on some flash drives, that also may be a concern. In my
case
the working stick was well below what they said would work so who knows.

I have had the exact same issue as noted above. Kingston Data Traveler. 4gb
drive. Apple TV running 2.4.
Patchstick creates without any problems, however, the Apple TV refuses to
recognize the drive at all, it just boots
as normal. Have pretty much torn my hair out over the last 24 hours trying
different drive formats
(journaled/unjournaled), just trying to see if there is any difference, but it
simply refuses to work.
I am going to go back to the store and purchase a different USB drive and
hopefully, I will have no more
problems. People should definitely stay away from the Kingston Data Traveler
Drives.

Kingston Data Travler didn't work for me either. Generic unknown brand worked
fine. Thanks for the prior
posts.

I am having the same problem with a sandisk cruzer 2gb. My apple tv is 3.0.1
and the
patchstick is using the 3.0.1 firmware. It just won't boot though. Any
suggestions?

Brand is no guarantee of success, it varies each USB. All I can say is try
other
USBs and hold Menu and - Keys.
Merry Christmas
