If worst comes to worse, why don't you Restore 2.3 and then upgrade straight up
to
3.0.1 (fresh installs)

Sam > I spent 4 hours yesterday trying various options. In the end, I even took
the HD out of the ATV in
hopes of re-installing? At this point my suspicions are (a) whenever I
installed the Patchstick that enabled the
USB port for external HDs, that did something to alter the boot sequence? (b)
At the same time, the script
probably corrupted the recovery partition or the image?
I don't know enough to pinpoint the problem. Upon checking /etc/hosts, it is
clean as it should be i.e. there is
no line that refers to 'mesu.apple..' Upon performing diskutl list, I receive
the output the way it should be with
all 4 partitions visible and their sizes are intact too. So I am at complete
loss as to why the ATV is not
updating nor restoring?
I wish there was an easy way to format the HD and reinstall everything to make
it as good as Factory new. I
don't mind whichever version I have so I can update from there. Find it strange
that there is no way to Factory
Reset this after a software based hack has screwed up.

You can restore the thing like new. You can get an image of the drive from
various
websites.
