I have reinstalled three times this morning and am having the same issue.
Issue
Installed patchstick as instructed
New menu items are loaded
Upon selection there are no contents to any of the menu items
I have built the patchstick both on a IMAC Intel based system (10.6.2) and on a
Mac Pro Dual Proc Power PC
(10.5.x) It has been installed on an ATV (40G) running 3.1
If you hold the (play button) select on the remote for over three or 4 seconds
on any of the menu items the
entire screen will go black as if it is taking you into the menu item. To back
out you just push the menu
button on the remote. this does occur on every one of the menu items.

Would like to know how to manually install the latest Software Menu via SSH;
it's supposed to work with OS 3.1,
but can't be updated from the ATV itself. Tried following the instructions from
the developer page but it
assumes a thorough knowledge of Terminal/Unix commands...

Same problem here. I have a "Software Menu" along with the Apple menus, but the
items in the Software Menu
do not open.
Only difference from the original poster is that I am using Apple TV 3.0.1 (Is
that what he meant to write?).

I did this, and it worked, but I have no idea what I am doing:
wget http://iscripts.googlecode.com/files/SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run
chmod +x SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run
./SoftwareMenu-1.0b1.run

That's it. What you are doing is downloading the latest version of SoftwareMenu
with
wget, setting appropriate permissions and then running the installer.
