How do I know if the patchstick was created properly? #457

I want to patch ATV because my external drive crashed and ATV is the only
place where all of my photos still exist. I'd like to put SSH on there so
I can get all my pics off of ATV onto another storage device and backup.
Since ATV has the only copy of my kids' photos, I really really do not
want to mess this up.

After reading all the posts about patchsticks not being created properly,
I want to make sure mine is right before I plug it into my ATV. I
followed the steps and created the patchstick image. When I complete the
USB Image Tool step, I try to open up the flash drive but I get an error
message saying that the drive is not formatted - do I want to format now.
Does this mean the patchstick wasn't created right? Do I have to look for
another flash drive to do this with? How will I know it created
properly? Should I see some type of file structure on the flash drive
when I open it up?

Also, I read that a lot of people had to do factory restores. What is
this? Will it wipe out all of my current data on ATV?

thanks for you help!

What steps will reproduce the problem?

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Please provide any additional information below.

Relax,

People who say their patchstick didn't work are having issues with Launcher and
this
has all been updated to work with Windows and firmware 3.x. You've got to
remember
that people who have success do not create an issue :)

You are correct it is not formatted right... for Windows. It is formatting to
work
with the Apple TV. Windows can't see all the partitions, don't worry about it.
If it
restored in USB Image Tool, then it should be good. Give it a go, and tell me
how it
goes, it should work.

And if you've got invaluable data, you should have backed it up beforehand.

Good luck.
