Blinking atv logo on boot #508

My ATV will not boot after patching. Can't make af factory restore. Can I 
bring it back to life? No Linux experience. Working on af windows 7 
platform. Sorry, if this forum isn't for these kinds of questions. Trying 
desperately to get my atv back to life!

Can you be a little more specific, why is it not booting? What do you see? Have 
you 
tried holding Menu and - Keys for 6 seconds while booting, you might be able to 
force a recovery this way.

Hi, I have similar problem. I installed Nito TV from patchstick and Smart 
Installer
as I wanted to mount NAS under afp. The Smart Installer didn't help to make afp
working. Second try of Smart Installer gave interesting choice "Restore path?" 
Y/N. I
restored and ATV hanged out. I had to reset it holding Menu and -. After than 
ATV
blinked with logo and fell into restarting loop. Holding Menu and - doesn't 
help it
is in the loop, no shh. Interesting enough, I can start ATV from patchstick, it
installs all staff and asks to reboot holding Menu -. After than ATV once again 
falls
into restarting loop. Any idea how to get to Factory Restore without removing 
the disk?

It's rather simple. When I turn the ATV on, I get the blinking apple logo. I 
have 
tried the menu + down key, and the ATV reacts - but only to reboot with the 
blinking 
apple logo as a result. Tried to patch it again, but get error messages. I'm 
quit 
sure that the boot files in som way got corrupted or deleted. Now i'm looking 
for a 
way to tricker the factory restore without the upportunity to access the nice 
apple 
menues... oh, how I'm missing them! Still any suggestions are welcome. 
Zinkot, you are a step further than me - you are able to boot the ATV. Would be 
nice 
to get to that point!

I followed a different path, but still no succes. On pirate bay I found af full 
image
of a original atv (dmg-file). I'm used to restore full images to my pc once in a
while, when things go wrong, so a thought this might be the solution. So I 
bought a
usb link so I could connect the atv hard drive directly to my pc. But 
unfortunately I
can't find a program that restore the image to the atv hard drive. Tried magic 
iso
and TransMac, but no luck. TransMac can in fact open the dmg-file, and I have 
managed
to burne the image to a dvd. Out of desparation I tried to connect the atv to a
extern dvd drive with the little hope, that the atv would boot from the dvd. 
Actually
a could here from the spinning dvd drive that there were some kind of 
communication
between the atv and the dvd-drive, but to cut the story short the atv still 
booted
with the blinking atv logo. One of my biggest problem is that I don't have a 
mac,
which makes it even harder to make things work. So, my friends, I think my atv 
is at
its end, or I'll have to send it back to service, which doesn't come cheap.

You had no success because you tried a different path. I have put up the 
sufficient 
instructions to restore your hard drive image. aTV is not going to boot of CD. 
What 
gave you the idea it would?

You also don't need to torrent these 1.0 images, a 3.0.2 will do fine, after 
all you 
just need a few files from it, and this will work for any version provided all 
files 
are extracted from the same image.

The best way of restoring your aTV without even removing the drive is using the 
rebuild script. Your partitions will be formatted and recreated for you, with 
the 
necessary files put into place. You ask if there is any software that will let 
you 
do this from the Mac. There is, it's called dd.

When did these problems start occuring? Did you install some software on your 
aTV 
recently? Can you trigger the crash in anyway or does it happen randomly? Try 
and 
repeat the crash if you can.

The problem started after I ran the REBOOT script.  Can't remember the exact 
sequence that I was installing 
various options, but I had done a smartinstall, messed around with adding 
topshelf etc.  Couchsurfer was also 
installed around then.  Now on reboot I get the blinking apple logo at startup. 
 Clearly it's finder crashing.  Can 
SSH onto the machine.     Should I start removing applications/plugins?

What gave me that idea...? Well, I think most of you have been there, trying 
all 
sorts of things to make things work. I didn't recon it would work, but it was 
worth 
trying. I'm at the end of the line here - the atv is going back to the US for 
service. The rebuilding script may or may not be the solution, and I would most 
definately give it a try, if I knew where to begin. But I have no idea, where 
or in 
what program to write these scripts. I don't own a Mac, nor do I work in a 
Linux 
environment. My only tool is a windows machine.
Thanx for your help anyhow, and sorry, if this forum wasn't intended for a 
rookie 
like my!

@reeves.robert: I had a funny idea something you installed caused it. Maybe not 
everything you added was 3.x compatible. Anyway, no harm done, you can either 
restore it, or if you can SSH in, then you can ls and delete any new plugins 
with 
sudo rm -rf /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/PlugIns/PluginName

You will need to download fullfat (google it) for disk access. Disk 
manipulation is 
limited on windows. You can download this though. My best advice would be:

1. Create a patchstick (atv-win-3.0)
2. Download fullfat, select your output image in FFTerminal demo.
3. delete patchstick.sh, replace with rebuild.sh renamed to patchstick.sh
4. create rebuild folder, add all that I mentioned is needed in #506
5. unmount
6. plug in and enjoy

Major break through this afternoon! I opened my atv and found out that bad
connections have been the cause of all my troubles. I bought this atv 
prepatched and
upgraded with a 500 gb hard drive on the american marked. I couldn't believe my 
own
eyes, when I opened it. The hard drive was fixed with plain, clear tape, and the
connection between the hard drive and the "motherboard" had been ripped of. I 
recon
this has happened during tranport. 

Pressing with my thumbs I can make it connect, but as soon as I let go, the hard
drive looses its power. Maybe some glue will do the trick! Or else I will visit 
my
local computer shop to hear what the proper solution would be. But I'm glad I 
finally
found out, what the problem was. I think I'll mail the US seller, and encourage 
him
to work on his computer skills. This simply isn't good enough!

No, the problem occured after the patch, but this was a pure coincidence. I 
thought, 
it was due to the patch, but now the patch works fine. Now it just have to 
figure 
out how to make the connection mo stable, but this I will not bother this forum 
with. This was my last comment here, have a nice life...
