What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. successful atv update I did not ssh any information to atv
2. installed nito etc & ATV then I hit relaunch finder from within a 3rd party
plugin
3. screen went black - atv click sounds when I press remote, but nothing
onscreen - I tried restart but once sync is done, black screen is back, I could
run movies from iphone remote, then I did factory resore and still same result

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
normal menu with atv plugins. Black screen

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

I used the older version of patchstick a couple of years ago... I did not

Exactly the same problem as Neil (above):
1. Succesfull aTV update (aTV was running v3.02, used correct atvusb-creator
version).
2. After restart downloaded and installed various 3rd Party software thru (new)
aTV Sotfware Menu, such as XMBLauncher and Sapphire.
3. Also tried to download and install Software Menu Update 1, but that didn't
work: status remained "Uninstalled".
4. Selected "Restart Finder".
5. aTV starts to boot normally (with colorful waves of aTV screens), but when
Menu is supposed to appear, screen goes black.
6. You can hear clicking menu sounds when using remote.
7. Did not make any SSH conncetion to aTV (yet).
8. Booted with same Patchstick again (this worked for Neil, see comment 1), but
not for me.
9. Now what?

Ok, dug around open issues some more and found a solution in issue 429.
It appears that ATVFiles is the issue, and you need to upgrade ("ahead of the
curve") to version 1.3.0b1.

For me, the easiest way to accomplish it, was:
1. Download the run file via http://ericiii.net/sa/appletv/ATVFiles-1.3.0b1.run
2. Copy this file to the aTV (I used CyberDuck, via an SFTP connection).
3. Open Terminal, log into the aTV via command "ssh
frontrow@YourATVIPaddressHere" and password "frontrow" (it may complain at
first a bit about unknown clients, but just accept the key, and it will add it
to the list of trustworhty connections).
4. Once logged on to the aTV, in Terminal enter command "sudo sh
ATVFiles-1.3.0b1.run" (you may need to prefix the file name with the path where
you put the file, look it up in CyberDuck).
5. Once finished, the script will ask you to "restart the Finder". Enter "Y" at
Terminal prompt.

Up and running again!
