Apple TV 2.2 - created Patchstick, inserted it, won't load! #60

I have an Apple TV running firmware 2.2, is atvusb-creator fully supported for
it yet?

Anyway, I created my Patchstick, with SSH tools as the installation option
(Wanting to run XBMC and
Boxee). I picked up a cheapo 1GB USB from Asda/Wal-Mart.

Ran the App on my MB - worked fine. Inserted it into my ATV w/ power off.
Powered on - Apple
logo pops up then runs straight into boot video (The one with all the screens).

I have since then re-created the Patchstick and it still wont work.

Any tips would be great.

usage under 2.2 is possible but you have to update to the 0.2 launcher once the
appletv is patched.

atvusb-creator is a work in progress, a new version is being tested that might
resolve the creation of the
patchstick. If could be that the USB flash drive you have just will not work
and you need to try a different brand.

Resolved! I ditched the old cheapo brand and went with a Maxwell 2GB - worked!

So let me get this right... I'm not a total no0b, just need clarification.

I've got the patchstick installed onto my aTV 2.2. Boxee and XBMC are upgraded
and working fine.
Now I want to install 'ssh tools'. Is it as simple as running "atvusb-creator"
with 'ssh tools' selected? Then restart
my aTV with the patchstick plugged in. It self-installs. Reboot. Then i can
access my aTV via ftp client using the
aTVs IP???

Should have selected all four the first time ;)

Yes, use atvusb-create to make a patchstick with only ssh AND binutils. Make
sure you are using atvusb-
creator-1.0b3 and NOT b1.

You will need a sftp client as an sftp server is installed, not a ftp server.

Wo0t! I HAD all four selected. cool.

right, sftp.

Just tried it and it works! (note: I'm testing for latest build, 7)

atvusb-creator is awesome! Where is the donate button ;) Keep up the
excellent work sdavilla

Cheers

But regarding an AppleTV with 2.2 firmware and atvusb-creator, when I choose
only to
install ssh tools, which update DMG do I have to choose?

Default the AppleTV version 2.1 (2Z694-5485-1.dmg) or with the "Choose a
DMG"-button"
a manually downloaden AppleTV version 2.2 (2Z694-5499.dmg).

Regards,

Martijn

Either DMG is fine, only one file is extracted and that is boot.efi

I'm also running 2.2. still can't get the USB to install. I open the USB and
the
software matches what is posted in the patchstick folder. is there another
software
to download? how much longer until an easier 2.2 upgrade?

@jaycaldwell13-> please expand the statement "still can't get the USB to
install". Be detailed in your description
as I'm not beside you and cannot see what is happening :)

hi,

i read it should be possible to install the software on a 2.2 ATV.

i tried to create the USB stick and used the 2.2 dmg, and choose ssh tools..

my usb stick got created. but however when i insert this USB stick in a
shutdown ATV
2.2 and start it up, nothing happens.....

if i however create a USB stick and use the 2.1 DMG and try to use it on a 2.1
ATV
evertything works...

but can this be because of there being only one option in the USB stick creator
GUI
which only shows appletv 2.1 and not 2.2 ???

grtz, Paul

could be some issue with the 2.2 dmg. That's why it's best to let
atvusb-creator to auto download the version
that has been tested to work.

The appletv selector in atvusb-creator is for other purposes and the four items
enabled are independent of atv
version.

sorry about that. after trying for a couple of hours, I still couldn't get the
USB to
be recognized on the atv. I started up with the patchstick and nothing
happened. the
atv screen never changed as if anything was being detected at start up.

I used 2 different USB sticks and both had the atvusb software installed
without a
problem. neither one was detected when I started the atv.

after running the atvusb-creator, what else needs to be done? is there another
patch
or dmg to use? I thought the atvusb-creator loaded what was needed, plug the
USB in,
and your done. am I missing anything??? thanks!

@jaycaldwell13 -> sometimes you need to force a recovery boot to get the
AppleTV to see a patchstick. To force
a recovery boot, power on atv and hold the "menu" and "-" buttons down on the
remote.

Is a factory restore also necessary some times? I have tried the recovery
reboot, but I still can't get the patchstick
to load. I see it blinks and light is on when Apple TV powers up, but there is
no indication that anything is being
or has been installed.

Patchstick also looks fine in the filesystem, and it's a new stick, so
shouldn't have any issues...

Ideas anyone?

The patchstick partition is not responsible for boot, it's the first partition
that you can't see and mount in osx
that holds the boot bits. If a force recovery boot does not work (you really
have to hold down the buttons and
keep them down), then maybe something funny with the usb stick and you need to
try another brand.

I was in the same position as DylanJamieBrown, with AppleTV 2.2 not even
booting from
the USB stick. I went through three different USB sticks of different sizes and
different manufacturers, all major brands, none of which AppleTV wanted to boot
from.
Just to be sure, I verified that the data written to the drive matched what
could be
read back. The USB sticks checked out OK.

What eventually worked for me was to plug in an USB SD-Card reader, with a 2
GByte
card, and that did the trick. Long story short: the problem may just be your
choice
of USB storage medium.

Sorry for not following up the post, but I managed to get it fixed, I just
tried a different brand. Out of the 5
brands I used, only one worked!

Anyway, thanks a lot!

Dylan.

Any Chance people can start to build a list of FLASH DRIVES that work.
That way we dont all have to play this game of Flash Roulette.

Cheers.
