Nothing is expected from a maintainer. Mostly I ask contributors to join to avoid accidentally leaving a good project orphaned if I get run over by a bus.
Nice to have's from a maintainer, with zero expectations and on your own time permitting.
make releases whenever you feel like (often self interested, like you've just added an API you want to use, make a release when you feel it's ready)- review other people's pull requests like I did here and merge/reject/comment- pay attention to issues/questions, comment/resolve/discuss
engage other active contributors as maintainers, like I am doing here
try and keep project alive if a piano falls on another maintainer's head
