Protest or demonstration?

Which of the terms should we use: protest or demonstration?

Demonstration seen to be the most correct term. But it can easily be confused with what we call a "demo", thus favouring protest.

However, a protest is not necessarily a gathering of people in a physical location. On the other hand, we can simply replace the location proof with some other piece of data to change it to another type of protest. Thus making protest the most general term.

On the other hand, the definition of demonstration is to express an opinion, which is not necessarily a protest (it can be in agreement). However, as we cannot securely verify demonstrations in agreement of the government, most demonstrations we can verify turn into protests.
