Trying to login to any website by sending the @ symbol (as part of an email address, for example) seems to actually input the character double quote character ".
From generally knowing defaults from American softwares and installs etc., I know that this is probably due to a key mapping issue (US instead of UK key mappings). I would imagine the same issue is present with other language key mappings.
Checked this by entering all the characters that differ between both mappings and found that the following characters are also affected, confirming my suspicions:
~ = ¬@ = "| = ~\ = #
