Proposing a logo for dc.js #618

Closed kadimisetty closed 9 years ago

kadimisetty commented 10 years ago

A logo is not a necessary component but it definitely contributes to dc's perceived quality and adds some flair to it's identity. I looked around the issues etc. but couldn't find any logo yet. This is my recommendation. It is based on the "unofficial" Javascript logo and reference's dc's attachment to D3.js as well.

So here's the logo I'd like to propose - dc charts - 152

If this is acceptable, I'd like to adapt the logo in any relevant formats like SVG's and multiple dimensions to suitable contexts like favicons or for the Github README page etc.

Awaiting criticism/suggestions. Thanks :)

gordonwoodhull commented 10 years ago

Good idea. Looks nice too.

Could you produce one that contains the name of the library, too, or what were you thinking there?

mr23 commented 10 years ago

I would like to see DC appear in it, perhaps in the background?

I apologize for my poor drawing skills...

How about something inspired by the D3 logo?

Further d3ification, colorwise - 152 - ipad app icon 5

nascif commented 10 years ago

Shouldn't the logo be square?

nice

kadimisetty commented 10 years ago

Yup. The above variations were based off the idea that this would be used in contexts like favicon's etc. 152 - ipad app icon 2

And something like this would be everywhere else - 152 - ipad app icon 5

Should I explore something where there would be just one square. Text in logos is not always the best ideas. Also I was trying to avoid too much similarity to the JS or D3 logos; but if you'd like me to explore that area I could :)

nascif commented 10 years ago

I agree about avoiding text in logos - that is the genius of the D3 logo, they turned text into something that looks more like a graph.

I think the similarity would be more like a homage. :-)

Maybe dropping the JS and sticking to the "DC" root?

Try de-emphasizing the x and y axis.

Once you have a few alternatives worked out, please share them on the mailing list for feedback/vote, since not everyone watches the repo.

kadimisetty commented 10 years ago

So I was thinking about what @nascif said and this is one direction worth exploring. 152 - ipad app icon 7 - single

And yellow, closer to JS 152 - ipad app icon 7 - single yellow

PS - @mr23 will try a variation de-emphasizing the axes.

kadimisetty commented 10 years ago

I might have to get off the computer for the moment. Please feel free to comment here. I will work on those suggestions and once there are some alternatives ready, will start a new conversation on the Google groups mailing list. After theres some consensus, I can work on refining the chosen one :)

nascif commented 10 years ago

Looking good! :-)

dc comics logo

looks pretty good with the swooping star? :) @kadimisetty nice work!

siddharthg commented 10 years ago

dc I tried and came up with this. The above logos are brilliant.

davisford commented 10 years ago

just to clarify -- i was being silly with my suggestion. it's the logo for DC comics. I suppose there are no comic readers here, tho, so no one recognized it :)

nascif commented 10 years ago

I sure did! Holy copyright violation, Batman! :-D

I vote for this one: image

gordonwoodhull commented 10 years ago

I think I'll post @kadimisetty's black square, the yellow one, and @siddharthg's for a vote, unless anyone has any objections. Maybe also the rectangular one but that might be harder to use.

mr23 commented 9 years ago

Where did this end up?

gordonwoodhull commented 9 years ago

I plan to go with this one:

There has been no actual release but let's make it official when 2.0 goes beta soon.

gordonwoodhull commented 9 years ago

Added to the repo and the main page. Also made it the favicon, since png icons seem to work with current browsers.

Any suggestions about layouts or formats welcome.

Thanks @kadimisetty!!! Nice work.
