In Chapter 6, I say "We define..." but then go on to say that maybe this isn't well defined. Maybe I should say that, "We want to define..." Either way, at some point, I need to make it crystal clear when the definition is and when it is allowed.
Perhaps if I retool things so that normality arises out of thinking about kernels and quotients first, this will sort itself out.
