Proposed DCMI Metadata Terms: http://purl.org/dc/terms/metadataSource

Label: Metadata Source

Source (database or system) of the metadata record.

Recommended practice is to specify the metadata source by means of its name or URI. It is also possible to give both the name and the URI.

SRAP: source (database or system) of the metadata record describing a scholarly resource.

For metadata on scholarly resources, common sources include • ISI Web of Science • Scopus • PubMed Central • ArXiv • Cab Abstracts Since names may change over time, a URI should be used, especially when there is one based on a standard identifier. Note: Institutional repositories may harvest metadata from external sources. Since the source may have an impact on how the metadata can be reused, it is important to keep track of where the metadata came from.

Example Pubmed Central</dcterms:metadataSource>

-- Discussion --

Is it appropriate to introduce metametadata into Dublin Core, and if it is, is metadata source an appropriate start, and how should DCMI proceed from there?

Things can get very complex if anything goes. See https://www.loc.gov/marc/mac/2021/2021-dp10.html for current discussion about data provenance in the MARC 21 formats community.

The working group decided in a meeting 2023-01-17 to not include Metadata source in SRAP. As meta-metadata element it differs from other SRAP elements. There were also concerns about the correctness of this information, since metadata created by some organization is usually modified by others. Better place for this information is administrative metadata record, which could also include metadata related rights.
