Recognised schema #6

As a developer I would like to be able to use any recognised PID system* to help share data.

*without having to wait for a metadata standard to be re-published to allow a specific schema to be used.

When you say any recognised PID system, would you accept a requirement that the PID be an HTTP URI? If so, I would strongly support your position! :-)

... HTTP(S) URI ;o)

I've just been talking to colleagues here about whether there are any non-URI PID systems in active use in our Library. In the ISAD (G) standard there is a 'Reference Code' although this isn't 'persistent' (but it is normally long-lasting). Similarly for EAD - and the eadid.

Useful - thanks! I think this is one of the central questions - can we get away with requiring an HTTP(S) URI? If we can (and I really hope we can) then much more becomes possible, because we then have a universal way of identifying the type of identifier from the PID itself.
