And note that Diane suggested dcterms:Contributor as the better equivalent. Their role appears to be more than that of a publisher (which might be closer to a distribution company). I believe that the director would be considered a creator.
RDA puts "production company" and "director" (including "film director" and "television director") in its list of "other" relationship designators; that is, non-creator relationships. In contrast, "filmmaker" ("A person, family, or corporate body responsible for creating an independent or personal film. A filmmaker is individually responsible for the conception and execution of all aspects of the film.") is in the list of creator relationships. So RDA does not acknowledge the "auteur" theory of film direction ... I advise erring on the side of caution with creator/contributor distinctions: "responsible for the conception and execution of all aspects ..." should be the key requirement for creator status; otherwise, it's a contributor.
Looking at http://pbcore.org still leaves me unsure:
http://pbcore.org/PBCore/creatorRole.html Creator Roles (person and corporate body) f.e. "Producer" or "Production Unit"
BUT: http://pbcore.org/PBCore/contributorRole.html Contributor Roles (person and corporate body) include "Producer" too.
I am afraid I started mixing issues, but the decision for "ProductionCompany" should be equal to the decision concerning "Producer" (https://github.com/dcmi/schema.org/blob/master/mappings_schema.org.xml#L105).
Having worked a bit with PBCORE, I think there are at least two kinds of producers in radio/tv -- the "production company" type producer, but also the person with their hands on the controls. I'm afraid that the natural language term has ambiguities. see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Producer_%28radio%29
I wonder if the relationship, if any, between dct:creator and dct;contributor is relevant here? That is, if we can't have "production company" as a sub-property of either of these without ambiguity (serious ambiguity in my opinion), then it must be a sub-property of a union of the two dct properties. E.g. schema:productionCompany subPropertyOf dct:associatedAgent, where dct:creator subPropertyOf dct:associatedAgent and dct:contributor subPropertyOf dct:associatedAgent.

Karen posted to the list on 3.9 that she "would contact a film expert to determine if production companies are seen as publishers/funders or as creators."
