Use web workers for KDF, encryption and decryption.

I'm using Scramble as my main email client, so I feel your pain.

This summer's been very busy, but I've now had a chance to look into the performance problems.

Certain queries are slow. Cleaning up the box table--it currently has way too many keys--and rewriting some of those queries will help.
mysqldump locks up the DB. I should set up replication slave and run the DB backups from the slave.
Viewing an email currently blocks on the PUT that sets that email from "unread" to "read". It should not block. Also, no PUT request should be made if the email is already "read".

I find it's particularly slow generating encryption keys for a new account in the Tor Browser Bundle, but fine if you use a regular browser. Not sure why that is.

I believe that the tor browser disables the JIT to reduce the attack surface of the JavaScript engine.
