Two things:
One, this isn't actually possible for things like strike. Strike tasks are not capable of using Search Then Engage (or any other type of enroute task).
Two, in a basic test I watched a strike F-16 that was set to only evade win against the MiG-31 sent to kill it, so it seems they're okay at it anyway.
Would be nice if we could force the defender to start the engagement if an enemy gets uncomfortably close, but we can't, so closing.
CAS/SEAD/DEAD/Strike/etc would probably all benefit from a (small) aircraft engagement radius. Currently they will defend themselves, but if the sidewinder has already been fired that's too late.
10-15nm for modern doctrine is probably about right. Any more than that and they won't succeed at their assigned mission. Any less and they're fairly at risk.
