please do not merge in any code dealing with the GUI right now, as I am in the middle of a major cleanup and refactor on that

yeah, i'll handle integrating the GUI edits from this PR into what i'm working on now (the GUI code is becoming MUCH tighter now that we have everything settled into what it needs to work and look like).
